Chapter 15
Kaci
Kaci texted one-handed while slipping on her tennis shoes. Going to breakfast with Drake and his parents. Iâll catch up with you later. Big plans today?
She couldnât keep Sam at armâs length. But as long as theyâd been friends, if Kaci talked too much about Drake, Sam would know the truth. It wouldnât matter that Kaci was trying to change the way she felt. It wasnât working, but hurting Sam was the last thing Kaci wanted to do, so walking a tight rope became her priority.
Nothing. Doughnuts tomorrow? Or will Drake be stealing you all weekend? Sam made it hard to gauge if she was still angry.
Tomorrow morning is great. Kaci hit send and ran to answer the knock at the door. âHey, Drake. Come on in.â
âMorning.â Drake let the door swing closed behind him. âYou look nice.â
âThanks. I was worried the sundress and tennies would be too casual, but clearly not.â She pointed at Drakeâs shorts and muscular legs.
âAfter breakfast, Mom and Dad want to visit the Alamo and the Riverwalk.â
âSounds fun.â
âI thought maybe weâd have dinner at the Pearl.â He touched her arm. âAre you really okay with this?â
âI am. Give me a second.â She ran back to the bedroom and grabbed her purse off the bed. It gave her a moment to collect her thoughts. Why did he have to be so . . . perfect? After a deep breath, she met him near the door. âIâm ready.â
He opened the door. âMy parents really like you, by the way. You donât have to be nervous about that.â
She hugged him. âThank you for telling me.â
âI knew they would.â His hand lingered on her waist. âI think today will be fun.â
âThe hard part is turning off my decorating brain. Weâve been ordering stuff and shopping almost every day since . . .â
âSince we met.â Drake wrapped his warm fingers around her hand. âBut if we say that weâve spent every day together since we met, it has a whole different ring to it.â
âBut all true.â Laughing, she stepped behind him as they reached the stairs. âIâll follow you down, so you can catch me if I fall.â
âThatâs why Iâm here.â He glanced back and winked.
She kept one hand on his back all the way down the stairs.
When he opened the passenger door, his mom waved. âWeâre thrilled you can join us today. Itâs a real treat to be able to spend time with you.â
âThank you, Mrs. Davenport.â Guilt nudged Kaci. She didnât want to deceive them.
âWe canât have you calling me Mrs. Davenport. Youâre dating my son. Itâs Maisie. And this is Trey.â
Drake patted her hand then left his fingers resting on top of hers. âIâm the fourth. Too many Drakes wouldâve made life confusing. Although, heâs been Trey since long before I was even a thought.â
âMaisie and Trey. Iâll remember that.â She adjusted her seatbelt.
